October 9
Needful ThingsOctober 9 is the advertised opening day of Needful Things, the new shop whose unexplained name and hidden interior make its arrival an object of fascination in Castle Rock. The date gives that curiosity a deadline: at ten o’clock, the mystery becomes an open business, and the first customer walks in carrying a cake.
The Date and the Advertisement
The shop’s sign announces a grand opening on October 9 and invites people to bring their friends. An advertisement in the town’s weekly newspaper, the Call, repeats the date and specifies a ten o’clock opening, but offers no account of what the proprietor intends to sell. Framed by a ruffled border and a drawing of angels blowing trumpets, it promises only, “You won't believe your eyes.” The sales pitch sharpens the mystery rather than resolving it.
Anticipation in Town
Before opening day, the new shop is already a subject of speculation. Brian Rusk, eleven years old, is intrigued by the name Needful Things, while his mother returns repeatedly to the subject. On his way home from Castle Rock Middle School, Brian pauses at the storefront to peer inside, but a fully drawn shade leaves him with only his own reflected face and cupped hands. The closed window makes the shop’s promise tangible while keeping its contents unavailable.
Opening Morning
On October 9, two minutes after ten, Polly Chalmers walks down Main Street from her home to the shop. She carries a Tupperware container that the townspeople take to contain a cake. Her arrival is treated as characteristic of her, and her presence gives the opening a social dimension: Needful Things is not merely a new storefront but a place into which Castle Rock’s private histories and public curiosity are already converging.
